About

Mud and Fell originator Alan Dorrington has been involved in off-road pursuits, either on two wheels or two feet for 4 decades. As a cyclo-cross rider he started the popular 'Crossjunkie' blogspot along with cyclocross coaching and advice site Fluent in Cross, before moving back to trail and fell running following a bike accident.

Never happier than when covered in mud, Alan has run all over England and Wales in mountain marathons, fell races and supporting fell 'Rounds' for others. He also organises two popular fell races in Lancashire. At Mud and Fell he brings together his love of maps, outdoor spaces and passion for encouraging others to get out there, explore and get stuck in.

Favourite Trails

Coledale Horseshoe, Lake District

A classic Lakeland horseshoe that I love for its easy accessibility and fine ridge running in a relatively compact area.

Halls Fell and Doddick, Lake District

A classic loop up and around Blencathra in the Northern fells. Scramble up, and race down two iconic ridgelines.

Malham Cove/Goredale Scar, Yorkshire Dales

Atmospheric limestone country in this popular part of the Yorkshire Dales.

Thieveley Pike circuit, Pennines

Typical East Pennine terrain with steep climbs and rough moorland, never more than 10 mins away from civilisation. Home to a classic short AS race that was my first ever fell race.
