How to use Mud and Fell maps

All our maps are designed to be used as a standalone (with a compass), but we provide a gpx file as back up. Build your confidence following the directions on the reverse of the map, keeping in close touch with the route marked on the other side, and referring to the gpx trace as necessary. We also recommend you bring the relevant OS map with you too (noted on each M+F map). Never rely soley on a gps device as batteries can fail especially in cold weather and devices can be damaged whilst you're on the hill.

Safety

All our routes traverse mountain and moorland areas where the weather can rapidly turn to sometimes very challenging conditions. Always take extra layers, waterproofs, and emergency bivvi and food/drink. During September to March it is best to take a headtorch too, in case.

In the event of an accident, if you require assistance call 999 or 112 and ask for Police then Mountain rescue. Many areas in the hills have poor mobile reception so a text or SMS will sometimes send when a call will not get through.

Weather

A mountain weather forecast will always you help you plan suitable equipment and clothing to take, as well as give ideas on the nature of conditions you might expect whilst out. The Mountain Weather Information Service mwis.org.uk is a valuable resource to help keep you safe.
